I am not trying to be dramatic, but it's pretty easy to come to the conclusion that Cursor is going to die. You are guaranteed, as part of your plan, to get more inference credits than your plan costs. So if you're at $20-a-month, you get more than $20 in API calls. This isn't a good business!

Cursor raised a $900m round in May, and at $500m annualized recurring revenue (so monthx12), if they're spending $2 to make $1, that money is gonna last them...what, 6-12 months?

It’s a dog of a company — deeply unprofitable, deeply unsustainable, and ultimately dependent on another company (Anthropic) that’ll undermine it at any given point, degrading the terms in which it accesses the models it needs to exist, while simultaneously developing its own competing code-generation products. Anysphere is only really good at two things —- burning money and user goodwill — and neither of those things have led to much of a business. Anyway, this company makes Cursor, a popular AI-powered coding product that has had multiple price increases in the last few months, likely due to Anthropic and OpenAI’s priority processing tiers, pissing off users in the process. Nevertheless, Anysphere raised $2.3 billion this week, and announced it hit $1 billion ARR — which sounds super impressive until you realize that’s $83-million-a-month, which does not sound like the amount of money that a company worth $29.3 billion should be making. Cursor is also not a particularly-differentiated product, and is heavily-dependent on Anthropic (Anysphere is Anthropic’s largest customer for API calls), which is why it took such great pains to build its own “Composer” model. Many people are eager to suggest that this somehow means that Anysphere will turn profitable, to which I ask why did Anysphere raise $900 million in June and then have to raise $2.3 billion five months later? Is it because of how profitable the company is? If I had to guess, Anysphere is raising money while the getting is good, and sources tell me that the company has been batting away funding offers for months. I bet this company plugs along for another year before things get tight, but it really comes down to how much the company actually makes and how much the company burns. The last few months of random product changes — like the massive mid-June changes to the product that massively increased customers’ costs — suggest that money is (or was) tight. Anyway, at least they now have two point three billion fucking dollars of cash. Imagine investing that in something with an actual future! Honestly, I hope Cursor tries to IPO. I’d love to see its insides. Give me a look. Show me. Show me now.

Even the major enterprise [software-as-a-service] companies like Anysphere, which makes [Al code editor] Cursor — they're deeply unprofitable and they just had to increase their prices, and change their product materially, to the point where it's completely different and you can do so much less with it. They got to $500 million in [annual recurring revenue] selling a product that they can't actually sell. So you've got this giant industry where everybody's just saying "Al, Al, Al," and yet it doesn't make any money. Another thing is that the products themselves are not that useful. A lot of it is being sold on what people wish it would do rather than what it actually does. [Editor's note: Anthropic, OpenAl and Anysphere did not respond to request for comment from MarketWatch.]

Okay it should be a much bigger deal that they reduced their projections for selling agents by $26bn, and no, the reason isn't "they'll build them into ChatGPT," it's because they don't god damn work. Sam Altman said this was the year that agents would change the workforce! Nasty!
Notably, OpenAI lowered its projections for generating revenue from its application programming interface, which companies such as Anysphere and Salesforce use to power their AI applications, by $5 billion over the next five years. And it projected about $26 billion less revenue from “agents,” or products that involve AI that handles tasks involving multiple steps. The reasons for that couldn’t be learned, but it’s possible that more such technology will be built into ChatGPT rather than offered as a separate product.
