This beauty is a harnessed tiger moth (Apantesis phalerata). She is a custom order I made for one of my lovely clients a couple weeks ago. I don’t normally make my moths with their wings closed, but I’m really happy with the way this one turned out.

As described this is a half-drop repeat pattern made from my oval cyanotype with an image wildflowers and grasses with three linocut, moths. The moths are all found here in Ontario: the yellow and purplish-pink Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis), the red-orange, black and cream Virgin Tiger Moth (Apantesis virgo), and the black and white White Underwing (Catocala relicta). There’s a dark blue background like that of the cyanotype.

W is for Wednesday, and for Williams' Tiger Moth, Apantesis williamsii - which, helpfully, has a "W" on each forewing, one of the best examples of personal branding in the insect world.
