#Aplectrum
It's the very end of November and most vegetation has senesced, but there are still orchids to be found along the Appalachian Trail, including:

Downy rattlesnake plantain (Goodyera pubescens)

Putty root (Aplectrum hyemale)

Crane-fly orchid (Tipularia discolor)

🌱 #native #orchid #Aplectrum hyamale / Putty Root grows its corn husk leaves in the fall which last into spring. Small flowers are easy to overlook. March of 2018.

🐡 Native puttyroot orchid, Aplectrum hyemale. The single basal leaves are up now and I'm excited to see many more than last year. This is my nature journal page

Thanks to the 30 who came to Smith Creek Preserve on Sat! @jenoglesplants.bsky.social & @andrewruegsegger.bsky.social led the group to Elise Falls, pointing out plants along the way. Highlights: Aplectrum hyemale & Tipularia discolor in leaf, Hamamelis vernalis & Erythronium albidum in flower.

the orchids are (if you live north of Atlanta and east of Minneapolis) Goodyera pubescens, Aplectrum hyemale, and Tipularia discolor

These are our other bigger (much rarer) winter orchids, Aplectrum hyemale | puttyroot orchid 🌿.

These big leaves will absorb sunlight in the open winter woods and die back, only to bloom in midsummer.

The roots can be crushed to make glue, which is where the common name comes from.

Out of curiosity, what kinds? A Mid-Atlantic native orchid enthusiast here (Aplectrum, Tipularia, Spiranthes, Cyp. currently) that would love any advice you have, particularly on Goodyera (my past attempts never seemed to establish themselves) and Calypso and Galearis.

Saw a puttyroot orchid (close to home), first of the Hepatica blooming, and another superb owl, by the creek below the house... good day for #CritterSpotting

Todays #CritterSpotting :

Pileated woodpecker (almost positive), annoyed to see us--kept hiding on the other side of a tree, finally flew off.

Beaver dam and lodge still looking good... still haven't seen the beavers themselves

Lots of little orchids (Tipularia, Aplectrum) with a leaf up
Today's #CritterSpotting : Gorgeous hawk swooping low where puppy and I went into the woods... down the hill so not that high above us. Probably red shouldered. Quick and it was gone...
Today in #CritterSpotting : beaver dam! They seem to have moved to a safer place down the creek, where they're unlikely to be killed by neighbors w/ fancy trees planted on the lake bank—which is great news!

Maybe 18 buffleheads on the lake

Puppy says I am supposed to tell you we saw squirrels, too

Aplectrum hyemale. The "name comes from Greek & signifies 'spurless.' The species is commonly referred to as Adam & Eve or putty root; the latter refers to the mucilaginous fluid, which can be removed from the tubers when they are crushed; [its] used by the Cherokee to mend pottery"
