Appalachian Power has announced a significant reduction in electricity costs for Virginia customers.

That’s in contrast to the company’s April filing in West Virginia, which asked regulators to charge customers $5 more a month to pay for fuel expenses.

Appalachian Power has submitted a petition to lower its fuel factor rate with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC), citing declining energy prices and increased integration of renewable energy sources into its operations, which would result in an estimated monthly savings of $10.06 for typical residential customers if approved. The proposed reduction would bring the new interim rate down from 4.139 cents per kilowatt-hour to 3.133 cents/kWh, effectively lowering rates slightly below the national average and making them more competitive with other utilities across the country.

Appalachian Power conducted a yearly test of its hydroelectric facility near Smith Mountain Lake, operating it at maximum output to assess its capacity during periods of high electricity demand, such as heatwaves, which can strain the grid and prompt regional grid operators like PJM to request additional power generation. The test aimed to ensure reliable power supply during peak demand periods, while also advising residents in the area, including boaters, of potential water level surges due to the increased water flow through the turbines.
