Here’s an EV design that’s actually practical and has solar roof options from aptera:

Got to ride in an Aptera this week and it was awesome!

You're hopelessly fucking stupid.

The back third wheel turns on the Aptera regardless you absolute half wit chimp for brains 😂
November 5, 2026 at 1:12 AM
This sounds like something the after market will provide, perhaps? Or, some clever person will find one already made that works with the tie downs in the Aptera.

Please consider making the back wheel a dedicated generator. The Aptera could charge up with so much more energy while in motion.

At leaat with Aptera, people get both a wide range & free fuel. Best of both worlds.

Some people don't realize that their driveways are solar charging pads.

A lot of people don't even use their vehicle daily.

So as the Aptera catches on that it sips fuel while always refueling, it sells itself.

Today's @aptera.us listen is an audio recording of a Q&A with their solar engineers. Aptera has a curved set of solar panels embedded in glass across the roof, hood, and dash which are measured to produce over 400W. youtu.be/jgMsd_eRKdo

Well, as I mostly agree with your politics, this is disappointing. Get an engineer to explain to you that the rear wheel is being rotated by the very same forces that propel the Aptera, and any drag on the wheel... a generator or braking, for instance, will take energy away from forward motion.

There's a Q&A with the CEO of @aptera.us for their brand ambassadors, and one answer is about how they picked OpenPilot simply because they could operate it with a low power requirement. Turns out the LIDAR techniques really are power-hungry. youtu.be/YePL61N4ff8?...

The underside scoop is gone as a design element, so that resolves the one clearance issue I had with using an Aptera as a daily. It should clear ramps better than a sedan, then.

Aptera won't launch with MC4 connectors to access the DC solar output because of (very reasonable) safety and safeguard concerns. You wouldn't want to mess with some very expensive panels to replace or cause a fault.

So, DC out from the vehicle will be limited to the 12V aux port and USB-C.
October 30, 2026 at 6:44 PM
I would eventually expect V2L support via the NACS port, but the camping model of the Aptera is that you use the vehicle itself to sleep in with a pop-up rear trunk tent which would be easier to light and control the climate for.

Running an induction cooktop etc would require a separate unit.

Aptera aiming for 100Wh/mi at 60 mph means the powertrain itself is only drawing 6kW of power from the battery, so an additional kW-scale load is significant.

They claim their implementation of OpenPilot using a few cameras draws 7-8W, which is remarkable if proven.
October 29, 2026 at 6:22 PM
This is in the context for why adapting a two-speed transmission will take more time, basically no transmission is efficient enough in the same power band as the Aptera.

FWIW this is true on electric motorcycles, and any multi-speed gearing has benefited performance rather than efficiency.
October 29, 2026 at 6:56 PM
I think it's worth noting that the 400W measured best output of the solar panels on the Aptera would therefore at best result in a 6% reduction in the power draw at highway speeds.

I think there's an interesting case to find Aptera's power draw at 25mph and find out how that compares to 400W!

Here's a link to explore the fascinating #Aptera (NASDAQ:SEV) for yourself. Unlike #Twike, Aptera is delivering its first retail car off the assembly line in #Carllsbad, this December! I am way down the reservation list, & still I am "quivering with anticipation" at finally sitting behind the wheel.

Aptera vehicles are going to SEMA! Every November, the automotive world’s best builds take over Las Vegas, and this year we’re one of them.

Come see the Aptera vehicle at the STEK booth (West Hall, Booth #52237) Nov 3–6, or spot us on the streets of Vegas.

And those are the reasons I have ten solar panels on my roof, and that I am getting an Aptera solar electric vehicle next year.

@aptera.us is supposed to start deliveries in December, but I'm #1286 on the list, so mine will be next year.

Inside the Aptera I’m hoping someday someone will demonstrate the cargo netting behind the seats.
In my 1981 DeLorean I have a Cargo Net covering the Parcel Shelf in the passenger cabin. The Cargo Net is installed in all DeLoreans manufactured from 1981 to 1983.
