Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLSP) conservatives are dense, membrane-free liquid droplets that form when macro-molecules like proteins and nucleic acids spontaneously separate from an aqueous solution into a concentrated phase and dilute phase.

Diamonds are scary!

They can include little pockets of water that remain at ~237000x atmospheric pressure (it's about 5,000x atmospheric pressure at the bottom of the ocean) once the diamond has been erupted to the surface.

The water is so highly pressurized it's Ice VII at room temperature.
Ice-VII inclusions in diamonds: Evidence for aqueous fluid in Earth’s deep mantle
The presence of ice-VII in diamond inclusions requires regions of the mantle with a free aqueous phase.

Oh, of course! You could perhaps even demo it. The assembly begins in the aqueous phase, but benefits from greater concentration after filtration.

We’ve been using phase lock tubes to streamline phenol-chloroform extractions. Unfortunately they’ve been discontinued everywhere we’ve looked. We recently tried Molykote (vacuum grease with intermediate density compared to aqueous and organic phases) with great results. Also much cheaper.

I’m Ben and I’m a hydrogeologist in France. My specialties include the hydrology of continental flood basalt, nearshore hydrology of volcanic islands in Polynesia, and working with dense, non-aqueous phase liquids in both fractured rock and unconsolidated alluvium.

Very happy to see this paper out! This has been a fun collaboration between @mcneill-lab.org and the Grassian group at UCSD. We are moving closer towards model representations of this intriguing size dependent microdroplet chemistry. Modeling by @sandhyasethuraman.bsky.social !
Size Dependent Uncatalyzed Sulfite Oxidation in Aqueous Microdroplets
Aqueous aerosols and microdroplets exhibit unique chemical kinetics relative to the bulk phase, impacting air quality and climate via multiphase atmospheric processes. Here, we investigate uncatalyzed...

This week we got a new instrument for deep-UV cw laser measurements in aqueous solution. Some of our serious @TROPOS_eu #ACD senior scientists moved it to the aqueous phase lab 😀.

Good reference for going "we have known about volcanic arc magmatism being caused by the movement of silica-rich, aqueous fluid from the cold slab into the overlying hot mantle for decades"?

Or simply for "of course aqueous fluids can exist as a free phase at mantle pressures!"

Optimization of Polyelectrolyte Coacervate Membranes via Aqueous Phase Separation
Polymeric membranes fabricated via the nonsolvent-induced phase separation process rely heavily on toxic aprotic organic solvents, like N-methyl-pyrrolidine (NMP) and dimethylformamide. We suggest tha...

🌫️🧪 Dust and water make more air pollution than thought

Dusty particles with nitrate coatings help form secondary organic aerosols (SOA) even in larger dust particles.

Dust-driven SOA may account for up to 74% of total SOA in key regions.

My friend, Professor Al-Abadleh, or Hind as I called her, had the office next to me for 6 months when she was a Fulbright Fellow at UCI. She was a wonderful person. I loved chatting with her about aqueous-phase transition metal chemistry and life. www.wlu.ca/news/spotlig...
