one of my tasks was to create an online version of that - that was back when ArcIMS first came out (if anyone here is old enough to remember that!) Ended up having a consultant build a custom app for it that was more database lookup than interactive map, though. I got to maintain the database. fun.

Sounds familiar. I once had someone insist she was perfect for our GIS Analyst vacancy because she used our ArcIMS site on a daily basis working for a different department. 🤦♂️

I actually grew to love ArcIMS. it was clunky and frustrating, but pretty open and extensible. Couldn't find a screenshot of my earliest site in 2003, this one is from 2006. #old

I don’t know why I let the fact that ArcGIS Online can’t handle annotation layers get to me when as far as I can tell, AGOL can’t even rotate a F-ing text label.
Come on Jack! This is basic mapping. Hell, you did it fine with ArcIMS, and AGOL is supposed to be better than ArcIMS! Am I right?

As I’ve recounted before, what became HIFLD started as the M: drive on a Windows server in a musty government building in Norfolk, VA. Early exercises made it obvious that the data on our M: drive didn’t match the data on other M: drives. They also made it clear that sharing data, especially across 2002-vintage government networks was painful. (Picture shapefiles sent as email attachments to multiple messages to keep under the 5MB attachment size limit.) So a couple of us stood up an ArcIMS server to share some of the data.

Two ROVs (the yellow little shape) are visible parked outside of their containers. The purple containers hold the SWEEP gear and probably SEA CAT UUVs for use on the ARCIMS USV. (15/19)

I have played with past iterations of this theme going back beyond ArcGIS 8.x when web was still in pre-ArcIMS days and .NET was central to Esri's framework. None lasted.
