Same. we know the archetype. We are the archetype. The archetype has a very obvious and very avoidable failure mode and it's extremely embarrassing to fall in it. But even the minimum of self-awareness required to avoid it is lost on some people unfortunately.
like I suspect many of you on This Website, I think a core reason why I find Eliezer Yudkowsky and his rationalist and effective altruist satellites so intensely annoying is because I had a VERY similar “being a super weird, pretentious, hyper-literate kid” experience - I just, you know, grew up.

we have an entire cultural archetype of the boorish racist who “tells it like it is!” of course voters knew and quite a few of them either liked it, thought he was correct, or understood the racism as confirmation that he was an honest broker, as per the archetype
The most condescending take is truly “voters didn’t know Trump was that racist.” They either liked it, a lot, or didn’t find it all that objectionable. A reality we have to deal with.
