New art today! Another fun mammal! This time it's the short faced bear arctotherium! (Don't worry, he's mostly focused on his lil scratching log)

Have I ever mentioned I find it funny that Arctotherium has the name it has? Of course it's a "bear beast", it's a bear!

Not sure why the sight of an Arctotherium basking in the morning sun brings such joy to my heart, but it does! #PrehistoricPlanetIceAge

Der heutige #räuberdestages ist vor ca. 11.000 Jahren ausgestorben: Arctotherium, eine riesige Bärengattung, die rund 1.5 Tonnen wog und 5x so groß und schwer wie ein Eisbär war. 😳🔥

Anyone know where I can get an Arctotherium angustidens figure at around 1/35 scale lol

No one was ever bigger than the #FrightClub #GrizzyFrightClub bear.

The biggest ever was the South American giant short-faced bear (Arctotherium angustidens).

They only got to 11ft on their hind legs.

Buncha pussies. 🙄

Although this Arctotherium angustidens specimen is best known for its size, just as fascinating is the fact that BOTH of its humeri got injured at some point. The degree of healing indicates it survived long after sustaining these injuries. #FossilFriday

Someone on Reddit about a week ago made a size comparison between Arctotherium angustidens and a southern elephant seal. I can’t speak to its exact accuracy, but imagine if in the Arctodus sequence in PhP Ice Age the sea cow had fangs.

some of the notable arrivals in south america included proboscideans, bears, big cats, ungulates, and rodents. most relevantly for the phorushracids, this included bears like arctotherium and big cats like smilodon – new competition for the terror birds

To be honest, I was initially confused as to why Arctotherium was portrayed as an immigrant to SA. What I didn't realize until now was that we have a deciduous tooth of cf. Arctotherium from central America. Either the genus evolved in NA or evolved upon arrival to SA.

Sun Bear? Or maybe the extinct "Arctotherium" (South American Short-Faced Bear)?

Remember when a bone found in a Mexican cenote was described as a new species of Panthera (P. balamoides) and I doodled this and everyone was like no way it can haul that crocodile up and at the end it didn't matter because the bone turned out to belong to an Arctotherium? Yeah.

This is an artwork I recently commissioned one of my friends on Twitter; many thanks to him for drawing this for me! Here, the Allosaurus Gwangi has killed an Arctotherium and a Barinasuchus. So now you're probably wondering "Ausar, why did you commission this?". And, well...this is why👇🧵

Why do I love the Arctotherium in #PrehistoricPlanet ?
Because it's the first ever short faced bear design that makes me say with confidence that 'yeah, that's a real bear that once existed' instead of 'that's a monster design based on a bear'.
