The French ship was the 40-gun frigate Armide, and the Calcutta engaged her for over an hour before the frigate withdrew. The firing attracted the attention of the other French ships, distracting them from pursuing the convoy, and they began to close in. By 5pm the 74-gun Magnanime was within range.
