Artist Omar Shaheed carved “Helping Hands”, a Columbus sculpture, in 2006.

But I can’t help thinking how much it looks like minor planet Arrokoth, discovered in 2014, the most distant celestial object we have ever closely photographed.

Huh, this is funny. Physical simulations of conditions on the Kuiper Belt object Arrokoth imply that a fairly significant fraction of the surface could be made of... sugars?

it's funny how comets that enter the inner system get kind of all scrunkled up from volatiles subliming away. like compare arrokoth (43AU x 46AU orbit) to 67P/churyumov-gerasimenko (1.2AU x 5.7AU orbit)

Astronomers probe deep-space time capsules: Arrokoth and other asteroids and comets preserve ices from the solar system’s earliest days. 🧪🔭🛰️

A new study suggests that deep-space objects like Arrokoth could preserve primordial materials from the dawn of the solar system.

New Horizons brauchte neuneinhalb Jahre bis Pluto.

Why is this not called an asteroid?

Arrokoth: Means "sky" in the language of the Powhatan people.

"Arrokoth isn't called an asteroid primarily because of its composition and location. Instead of being a rocky body in the inner solar system, Arrokoth is a frigid, icy world in the Kuiper Belt."

A view of Kuiper Belt Object 486958 Arrokoth made from image data acquired by New Horizons on January 1, 2019. This is a contact binary about 36 km long; it orbits the Sun at 42-46 AU and takes 298 Earth years to complete one orbit!
