Exciting to see a bucket-list spider while in Mexico!

An Ogre-faced Spider that I think must be an Asianopis sp. it also looks like there might only be one species present in Mexico? If that is the case this should be Asianopis aurita.

Cette image prise en microscopie électronique montre 2 fils de soie de l’araignée australienne Asianopis subrufa.

Ils sont composés d’un noyau élastomère gainé de fibres plus dures de tailles variables, formant une structure à la fois résistante et extensible.

Rufous Net-casting Spider (Asianopis subrufa)! These relatively large and beautiful spiders hunt by making a net that they throw over their prey, aided by two huge forward facing eyes with excellent vision.

The image shows two exceptional silk threads of the Australian net-caster spider, Asianopis subrufa. Unlike typical web-builders, this spider holds a specialized, sticky net between its four front legs. When an unsuspecting insect approaches, the spider rapidly expands its net and casts it over the prey, a maneuver that demands dramatic extensibility from the supporting lines at the sides of the sticky net. These threads are composed of an elastomeric core encased in a sheath of harder fibers of varying sizes; the result is a structure that is both strong and stretchy. The mesmerizing, looping fibers in the image capture the eye with their meandering fiber bundles, which shift in their complex winding from large to small scales.

The thread contains two separate strands, each of which is made of a soft silk core with fine loops of nanofibres attached to it. Upon extension, the thread initially behaves like a soft elastomer, but as soon as the fibre loops straighten they add to the load resistance of the thread, causing a mixed mechanical profile that combines elasticity with strength.

happy new year! my fav find from this year was def these undescribed Asianopis in Taiwan! found something like 12+ in one night.
