I really think part of the problem is that since gay marriage was decided, there was this popularized idea in queer activism that persuasion is for losers and sellouts (or, if you are in academia, "assimilationists" and thus instead we should just make demands louder and louder until we get them

Well, I'm about as persuaded that the national community is a fiction as I am that national identity is an extremely sticky sort of cultural identity that is not going anywhere before greater global political integration. So I wouldn't worry about assimilationists ever succeeding on this front.
