#Assistantships
Ah yes, to compete with manga--an industry famed for actively nurturing talent over years with newcomer awards, assistantships, and partner editors--comics must completely abandon the craftsmanship on display there and churn out hideous slop at top speed. That should turn things around.
This is so, so bleak. (Source: www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/42...)

TA’s get assistantships to teach while going to school fulltime. So by firing her from the TA position, she has also most likely lost her assistantship. This means she has to come up with money to pay for school and rent and groceries because now she has no income. This was a hit job.

I saw this amazing new talking point from a MAGA scientist on Facebook namely that Chinese communist students are taking away lab assistantships from Real American grad students who deserve them

An NSF grant would typically be enough to fund one to two Master's or PhD student's work for a project for 2 years.

Without that, students would be reliant on departmental resources--things like teaching assistantships, basically, which are usually somewhat limited science departments.

I have a master’s degree in music performance- for anyone who doesn’t know that haha. I got a full scholarship to undergrad and two assistantships in my MM.

I was really good.

And it just doesn’t matter lmao

I was a graduate student instructor back at Baylor. Not being allowed to teach would've removed my ability to pay my rent and groceries. The way these assistantships are set up are that you teach classes and receive a stipend for them as it is part of your learning experience.

Counterpoint: Universities should do *more* research and there should be *much more* public investment in resources like paid assistantships and internships that make it possible for students of all means to participate in it.

This has reminded me of an ugly time. I was in grad school at the U of Minnesota in 2008 when the financial crisis hit. Prior to that the norm in the dept I was in (history) had been that people could stay in grad school on assistantships until they finished the degree but the university introduced

NIH grants also provide research assistantships that offset tuition and living expenses for students, without which many would not be able to attend. This is especially true for my students at the University of Montana, where many come from rural communities and are first gen college students.

My Master’s program is kinda weird. You have to pass 3 initial classes before you can officially enroll in the program, which means no scholarships, assistantships, or financial aid while you’re doing that. I just finished the first, and I’m on to the 2nd. 🎉 🥳 🙌 #DataScience

Grok is slowly realizing grad assistantships are not only far more plentiful, but often higher-paying, than entry-level faculty jobs in the humanities

...and ensuring that there's no next generation of teachers, since teaching assistantships (despite their pedagogical and political-economic problems) are the primary means by which *tomorrow's* university faculty gain experience (and, if they're lucky, mentorship)

it is no surprise that I aspire to eventually complete a Ph.D. program - but, of course, the traditional residential Ph.D. with grad assistantships, etc., is not compatible with my current mode-of-life, and I'm very happy about my work as a pastor!, so I have no intentions of changing that -

I could apply for as many assistantships as possible or I could just lay down and die idk

I remember the year I started my PhD, grad students in my cohort who came in with teaching assistantships in the fall quarter found out that it didn’t guarantee funding for the winter quarter.
Ok. Only this one time.

If you are looking to go to graduate school in the sciences this year, I have a terrible thing to say.

Anyone who tells you they can guarantee funding? Is not being honest with you.

Just paid off my student loans!

I didn't have many loans. I was lucky to have scholarships & assistantships& support from family. Even so, without income outside of teaching, idk how I would have paid them back.

I still fully support debt cancellation.

Foreign students often pay out of pocket for grad school, whereas domestic students are subsidized with tuition waivers and assistantships.
