Karamolegos' very old vines 2016 Assyrtiko (up to 120 years) is holding brilliantly.Tightly wound, eventually expressive and powerful,it shows few signs of entering the next phase of development. It seems so young!And it does open and tastes great. That's what I like to see! 14%, ~$60. #wine #greece

1/2 This Assyrtiko from Pavlidis in Northern Greece is another nice example OFF Santorini. This 2022 is obviously young and fruity. Drunk next to a mature Santorini, it was an interesting contrast in both structure and style. This had its own merits, including nice balance and a sunny personality.

Gorgeous today, there's precision and a textured finish--it's all come together perfectly. It did need a couple of years in bottle to blossom.

This 2021 high-altitude Assyrtiko from Alpha in N. Greece is a bookend to Monday's Santorini. Assyrtiko's been getting good off of Santorini too! 🫡

BTW, on back label pic, note recommendation of decanting. I often discussed that with Assyrtiko producers. It's not unique to Assyrtiko--I find it true of young, new Rieslings too, esp w/sugar. They were hard to evaluate when young. Taste the next day or decant. At this age, just needed some air.

The end to Wed. I didn't get to: Classic Vinsanto--mostly Assyrtiko, dollop of Aidani, from very old vines (60/80). Sun dried grapes. This adds 300 g/l of sugar. Yet, it doesn't seem that sweet. There is power here and fine acidity too, even as rich as it is.

This 2012 was just singing. I can sometimes excuse a little oxidation for development and complexity, but there was none at age 13. Fresh and focused, this evolved well and held perfectly. Ripe, but textured and showing fine depth, it's super.
