In the early '90s (one of the sketches is dated '93), Jes was working on some Imperial Guard concepts, using modular elements to allow a kinda mix-and-match regiment creator.

Recruited as a tithe for the Administratum, these men are pledged to lifelong service to the Imperium, and once they leave their homeworld they are unlikely to see it again. Jes did the concept sketches above to show how regiments recruited on different worlds could be unified by the use of common elements like the helmets, armour and equipment. The three-quarter length military coat used on the Inquisitors, Navy crew and Administratum officials earlier also reappears as a common theme. Interestingly, in each case Jes has emulated a military style of dress instead of copying a period uniform. Also worthy of note is the lasgun redesign shown on the trooper opposite. I told Jes that the ubiquitous lasgun was really the AK47 of the 41st Millennium - and he took me at my word by incorporating the distinctive features of Mr. Kalashnikov's famous creation for this piece."
