Probably should have notified the #Astronomy and #AstroMethods and #AstroPhotography communities... :)
Just deployed an update to skycalpro.com not *too* exciting. Mostly tidying up code backend. Some users reported that the date didn't refresh correctly (cookie issue). for others, events weren't loading (cache issue). Should be fixed now. If you had problems before, might be worth checking again

The aperture masking interferometry observing mode on JWST has been improved, by using a sophisticated modelling approach. Report in @science.org by @danclery.bsky.social. ☄️🔭 #instrumentation #astromethods
Astronomers are trying to enhance JWST’s resolution using a novel “keyhole” mode that—paradoxically—blocks much of the light from the mirror. https://scim.ag/4ngV7Sy
Astronomers unlock a sharper view from JWST using a ‘keyhole’ trick
A revived technique could reveal planets near their stars and the inner workings of galaxies

Just spinning up the staging server. Been working on the Jupiter Great Red Spot drift rate automation and its now ready for the next stage of testing.

Cool image of the GRS from Voyager. I'll tell you more about it next week

I've found a really good Python library to create your own Sky Maps: starplot.dev. Really amazing to prepare observation nights. And great support of his developer, Steve Berardi.

Please spread the word! In addition to becoming an important part of the MESA project, the person in this role would have opportunities to collaborate on scientific software across CCA, which has a vibrant, interactive community of scientists and code developers.
We're seeking a research software engineer to develop, maintain, and contribute to community-oriented software instrument tool MESA (Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics). Learn more and apply: https://apply.interfolio.com/182988 #science #astrophysics #hiring

🍾FINALLY ON ARXIV! 🍾

Here are some lessons learnt from creating my Virtual Research Assistant for the ATLAS sky survey

(And no it's not some bullshit black box with a call to OpenAI - this is STATISTICS 📊 baby!)

So first, what is it?

An absolutely fantastic textbook on statistics and machine learning by Prof. Yuan-Sen Ting came out this week - and it's free! #astromethods ☄️

I had a read and it's incredibly comprehensive and well-written - I expect this to become *the* foundation book on stats & ML basics in astro.
Statistical Machine Learning for Astronomy -- A Textbook
This textbook provides a systematic treatment of statistical machine learning for astronomical research through the lens of Bayesian inference, developing a unified framework that reveals connections ...

Given that this is just about *replicating* papers - not even doing something novel - it's worth remembering that, despite all of the marketing and hype, we are a very very long way away from AI tools autonomously conducting novel research. 🔭☄️ #astromethods

My development machine now displays this map. This not available on the public site yet:

ISS: The point on earth directly below the Space Station
AND
MARS: The place where the observer would have to stand such that the ISS and Mars are in the exact same place in the sky😎

I've now got the eclipse times with 2 seconds of NASA's time. That's way better than yesterdays 15 minute estimation! The main point is that I have a process that can accurately predict and calculate Lunar Eclipses. It will be available on skycalpro in time for next week😎

I sometimes do vector graphics with Inkscape which does everything you ever want but is mind bogglingly intimidating. I do simple things with Keynote, but its a bit too simple, and doesn’t speak SVG. What is in between? What do people use? #astromethods

I have been a little slow on the development side of skycalpro. I'm optimising some backend code at the moment and it's proving to be a headache. Hoping to make a new release soon. I will see good improvements on my side, you will not notice much difference on yours. #AstroMethods skycalpro.com
