Mega work just published about the systematics of the genus Atelopus, with 2 new species described: Atelopus harlequin from Peru and Ecuador, and Atelopus histrionicus, which is endemic to Peru. Also Atelopus spumarius, an iconic species, is redescribed after reappearing in its type locality.

The 12yo has declared it Purple Harlequin Toad Awareness Day!

The spectacularly coloured, pint-sized Atelopus barbotini* is also known as the purple fluorescent frog is endemic to French Guiana in some specific upland rainforest regions and clear mountain streams.

The Frog 🐸 of the Week is the critically endangered Rio Pescado Stubfoot Toad (Atelopus balios) from Ecuador. Most of the genus Atelopus has been wiped out by Chytrid Fungus and habitat destruction.

Bon dia! L’Atelopus barbotini és d'un to violeta fluorescent amb reflexos liles i blaus. Aquesta coloració intensa i rara la distingeix dins del gènere Atelopus. Tot i la pell llisa i les llargues cames posteriors, és un gripau, no una granota. No és IA 😉.

Our friend the Manaus Harlequin Toad is a pretty toad from Brazil who was first described as a new species in 2020! Previously they had been confused with two other similar toads, Atelopus pulcher and Atelopus spumarius, who both had been identified since the late 1800's! (photo by Igor Yuri)

The Frog 🐸 of the Week is the newly described species, the Coloma’s Harlequin Toad (Atelopus colomai) from Ecuador. Sadly, they are only found in 6 places that are threatened by deforestation and pollution

The Frog 🐸 of the Week is the Mindo Harlequin Toad (Atelopus mindoensis) from Ecuador. They disappeared from 1989 to 2019 before a handful of toads were rediscovered. Its believed there's less than 50 of them left.

The Frog 🐸 of the Week is the Tri-Colored Harlequin Frog (Atelopus tricolor) from Bolivia and Peru. Unfortunately, the frog is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List. Most of frogs were wiped out by Chytrid Fungus.

Are you afraid of clowns? The only clown I don't find terrifying is the Clown Frog (Atelopus varius). Unfortunately, these frogs 🐸 are listed as critically endangered which is terrifying.
