In general they appear to strive to use native orthographies and modern transliterations where possible, even when the historical one is more memorable (see: "Athênai" instead of "Athens"), which is commendable, but they do this really inconsistently?

we have begun a game of benjamin franklin’s greece with the new system. we are cul-de-sac’d on the southern portion of the map. the independent people of hattusa will have to be annihilated because they built on the wrong tile. their inefficiency cannot be part of a future america

At 1.57pm, another warning, this time from another White Star ship, the SS Baltic, is received. This message warned that the Greek steamer Athenai had reported passing icebergs and large quantities of field ice just slightly north of the #Titanic's track.

Classic Athens vs. Sparta.

A screenshot I made in the pre-alpha of the upcoming real-time strategy game Strategos.

Wieder was gelernt.

How often does it snow in Athenai, Hellada?

When I wrote my epic of philosophers, I used Athenai as the spelling for the city of my dreams.

#aviation nerds, lots of Greek aircraft 1989, Athenai airport/Hellenikon AFB. Right outside my office, they ran the F-104s every Thursday around 1300. Loud as fuck, shook the building.😁😁

This is not unusual.

We say "Germany", not "Deutschland".
We say "Rome", not "Roma".
We say "Moscow", not "Moskva".
We say "Greece", not "Hellas", and "Athens", not "Athenai".

These are not exotic places we need to ask a local what to call it and how to say it. We have a name in English.

We're Greece, of course we build the Oracle. It provides Culture and narrative event bonuses, which will no doubt prove very useful. It even comes with its own Narrative Event, a compelling synergy!

The events of the next Generation Mars book are set in motion by the actions of an AI that has grown beyond human control. Athenai is quietly efficient and a very good hacker.

Just to the west of Athenai, we've founded the town of Sparta! That little army to the north was needed to clear out an independent village that was harassing us and blocking our desired town location. I guess an emphasis on city-states doesn't always mean a FRIENDLY emphasis
February 11, 2025 at 2:54 AM
I rolled random leader and civ because why not and it looks like we're playing as Catherine the Great leading Greece in Antiquity! Theoretically it will be a Culture-focused game with an emphasis on Influence and city-states
