🪐 Back in the UK after spending a wonderful week at Athribis working on the corpus of astral ostraca, which is now the largest in Egypt. Very productive days with some exciting discoveries, including the oldest date in a horoscope, which takes us back to the reign of Ptolemy XII!

Announcement of the discovery of the massive pylon of the temple of Ptolemy VIII at Athribis, with fascinating astral imagery! I was lucky to be there when these reliefs appeared. Another testimony of the importance of the astral sciences at the site! 🪐💫

It’s wonderful to be back! This is the first time I’ve been able to see the Giza pyramids from the plane while landing. The picture doesn’t show how breathtaking the view was!

And tomorrow, off to Athribis to study all the new horoscopes! 🪐

It’s time for my favourite ancient Egyptian drawing of a rock band 😉

Drawing lessons 2,000 years ago: The lower figure on the ostracon (pot sherd) looks a little bit more advanced and the upper one might have been copied from it.
From Athribis.

In ancient Egypt, people used fragments of pottery (“ostraca”) to write and draw on. Here’s a drawing of figures done 2,000 years ago, presumably by a young child, recovered from the archaeological site at Athribis, north of Luxor

The site of Athribis/Upper Egypt has revealed more than 43,000 ostraca (pot sherds used for writing and drawings), offering remarkable insights into a thousand years of daily life in Egypt.

My favourite: a drawing of a shrew, the sacred animal of the god Haroeris.

At Athribis in Upper Egypt (pleiades.stoa.org/places/756538) “archaeologists have recovered more than 43,000 ostraca between 2005 and 2026.” Most are Ptolemaic to Roman with a few Arabic. I am enjoying this cute post-it ostracon drawing of a shrew 🐁 (no shrew emoji): uni-tuebingen.de/en/universit...
