The duck's back and breast are light brown, and the folded, small wings have dark brown feathers with well-defined warm, light amber borders. The fluffy plumage behind the wings, down to the duck's tail, is medium brown, and the tail feathers are tan and dark brown. The still water reflects a pale blue sky, with just a ring of ripple around the duck, reflecting a brown duck shape and showing some of the dirt and rocks below the water. The still water and duckling's calm gaze give the scene a peaceful feeling.

Tricolored heron (Egretta tricolor) shown in profile in shallow water, body angled toward the bottom left corner of the frame and the water, stalking prey. The heron is a large wading bird with a gradient of grayish-mauve-ish purple and slate blue plumage, a white plume, white stripe down the long throat (with reddish violet markings dappling the white stripe), a round red eye, long gray legs, and a long, dagger-like, sharp bill that is yellow-orange at the base gradually becoming dark gray at the tip. Many small, bright green, leafy plants float on the still, silvery water.

An adult Northern mockingbird feeding a juvenile, fledgling mockingbird. The fledgling's mouth is open very wide, appearing to be in process of engulfing the adult's whole head! Part of the parent bird's black eye is visible; bill and front of face and front half of that eye are in the fledgling's mouth! Both birds are pale gray, with darker gray back and tail, and wings that same darker gray with black and white wingbars. The adult's body is long and slender compared to the pudgy, short body of the fledgling, whose belly feathers are fluffy compared to the smooth, sleek adult. The birds are perched on an unpainted wooden fence, against a pale blue-gray background (a painted shed).
