Been a while since I did a #ThinSectionThursday. Here is some beautiful larvikite (pyroxene monzonite): titan-augite, oxides and some biotite surrounded by large feldspars. This rock is widely used as a decorative stone but is equally appealing in thin section 🧪⚒️

Basalt thin section, from Arthur's Seat, phenocrysts of olivine, augite, and plagioclase. Olivine is a mineral series, forsterite (Mg₂SiO₄) at Arthur's Seat. Phenocryst; relatively large crystal embedded in a finer-grained or glassy groundmass of an igneous rock.

I’m thinking this one is anorthosite with some dark green augite in the mix. Tons of anorthosite up in Soledad Canyon, so that makes sense. Makes it between 600 million and 1.2 billion years old.

Here’s the unidentified green mineral we found yesterday in Acton, CA, off Hubbard Rd. Three flavors: as nodules, as amorphous intrusions, on its own as waxy shards. USGS signifies olivine in that area, but I would expect that to be more crystalline? A green form of chalcedony? Augite?

The lava of the 1631 eruption was rich in leucite and augite crystals.
