AUKUS and the delusion of progressive patriotism
Pat Conroy presents AUKUS as an expression of Labor values and Australian sovereignty. But its enormous costs, troubled procurement record and dependence on Washington tell a different story.

Labor is selling AUKUS as 'progressive patriotism'. But its huge costs, procurement failures and dependence on Washington hardly add up to Australian self-reliance, Kym Davey writes. #AUKUS #auspol

"AUKUS takes away Australia’s right to decide when and how we engage in armed conflict.

...tying ourselves completely to the U.S. was an act of self-harm and to distance ourselves completely was an act of self-delusion."

#AUKUS is Australia giving up what is left of our sovereignty. #EndAUKUS

The Albanese govt throwing billions at #AUKUS while #homelessness increases is a failure of budget and strategic priorities.

The govt's secrecy and refusal to have a proper parliamentary debate on AUKUS and the US 'alliance' is a failure of accountability. #EndAUKUS #auspol
Govt can find $368B and an additional $$150B to purchase nuclear subs and store weapons grade nuclear waste yet poor Australians survive in a tents. Public housing for US troops while battlers are ignored. What has Australia become? Why do we put warmongering before people?

Oh and Jim Chalmers, Katy Gallagher as you search for more savings, please think about axing AUKUS. $368B+ over 20 years is a direct export of Australian taxpayer dollars to submarine shipyards in the US and UK. Charity (and defence) begins at home. Please announce a review of defence expenditure.

Cut AUKUS, cut consultants, cut handouts to wealthy private schools. Start there
First cab off the rank for cuts - AUKUS.
AUKUS funds jobs in the UK, and USA, public housing in Australia for the US military, massive profits in the arms industry, lavish lifestyles for “consultants”, retired politicians, defence personnel and public servants.
No brainer!

Walls of secrecy have been established inside Defence to prevent any public oversight of the budget disaster caused by the explosion of AUKUS spending. Every other part of the ADF is getting squeezed, all to keep AUKUS going.

Even the Murdoch press abandoning the AUKUS debacle.
When the Murdoch press are saying no matter how much we have spent we should get out, then surely the Albanese govt should listen to the growing opposition to this madness.
