Just as I pressed submit after my count two Australian Magpies clashed viciously in the sky right above me, locking claws in the air for an instant before parting with angry cries . . . Tonight's winner was certainly the Rainbow Lorikeet!

Nankeen Night-Heron showed up on our dam last week, which was very nice of since I got to record it in my #AussieBirdCount surveys. Doesn’t like having its photo taken, but I finally got it! #ausbirds

Friends from NZ visited a few weeks ago, & Ian's camera caught what I couldn't - the spotted #pardalote building a nest in the end assembly of our retractable clothesline. Sharing this even though the #birds eventually chose somewhere else nearby to nest. Seen around since; into #AussieBirdCount.

The gentle sunlight of a #spring day filters through wattle blossom and new leaves on the crab apple - soon to be in flower. My favourite spot for the Birdlife Australia #AussieBirdCount later this month. Trees are already full of chirping. #Ballarat

Surely one of the many great things about the #AussieBirdCount is introducing more people to the unique frustration of a flock of cockatoos flying past just after you pressed 'submit survey'?
🪶🧪🌏
Seriously though, over a million birds counted and we are only just half way through! 🤩

In the #AussieBirdCount by @birdlifeoz.bsky.social each August, the rainbow #lorikeet was the most often counted species nationwide. They've spread with our homes & gardens (& were introduced from the east coast into Western Australia).
They're watching our plums ripen right now...

An appropriate article to encourage lovers of birdsong to join in the @birdlifeoz.bsky.social #AussieBirdCount next month. Many of the 'small brown birds' are a lot easier to pick by their call than by sight.

Sound UP! I survey Yellow-throated Scrubwrens in Royal National Park. Whilst in Boris and Natasha's territory yesterday I found a lyrebird foraging. Boris enters from left at 26 secs and begins his mimicry which will grow in volume and complexity. Enjoy this sonic celebration of planet Earth! 🧵 1/
