AUSTINMER, 69km from Central, is a cute little station serving Wollongong's northern suburbia. Its two platforms each have heritage weatherboard buildings in the typical NSW style. They both had waiting rooms, presumably only unlocked in morning peak when it's staffed. No departure boards. (1/3)

Living under the escarpment is the best thing about Austinmer, Thirroul and Coledale. It's also the reason you need to read the planning certificate properly. Landslip, bushfire and flood overlays all live in there.

I’ve been looking to retire down near Thirroul/Austinmer. Although the climate projections there are actually pretty decent (it’s sheltered from north winds), any place near the escarpment starts with a 12-45k pa insurance policy. It’s gone up by 40% in 3 years.

Yeah, my better half gets like this when I’m away for work. We keep talking about moving to Austinmer or Wombarra but we actually really like the vibe in the inner west (even though we’re old). But I think I need to retire so I can have 6 months to de-cruft the place before we sell it.
