When I first started my company, I thought that I had to "be on" all the time. Professional = Polished & Perpetually prepared. I did Amateur Dramatics in my 20's so when I started, "my business" was simply another role to play in life. The messaging I was receiving about how to "do" a business made it feel like I had to perform business and give it my all rather than live & let it sustain me. And honestly? It was exhausting, and made me very much not "me"! Under the surface, I was juggling chronic pain and fatigue that made simple tasks feel like wading through treacle, let along what I needed to do to "do" my business as well as hold down a full time day-job in IT Infrastructure, and back in those days commute 5 days a week as well! The hormone chaos and pain that didn’t care how many work meetings or after-hours coaching calls I had that day. So, I showed up with a mask on in pretty much all areas of life. It served no one, least of all me. Until I realised — I hadn’t built a business. I'd crafted a performance of a business. And it was costing me more than it was giving back. I worked with a mentor and made a big choice. To leave the performance behind So these days, I'm not at all into “performative business”, I'm into creating sustainable success. I work with my body and my energy, not against it. I choose real. I choose sustainable. I move with the rhythms of my life.
