Tune autovacuum workers and cost limits for high-IOPS storage

the easy answer is 'vaccines', but if i'm answering about tech it's stuff like

- stopped using leap seconds
- we abandoned utf16 and went to utf8
- gave up on traditional multicast and moved to bittorrent
- postgres got an autovacuum, heh
Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

7/ Autovacuum defaults are built for small tables. Default scale factor: vacuum when 20% of rows are dead. On a 100M-row table that's 20M dead tuples before it wakes up.

For hot tables: ALTER TABLE orders SET (autovacuum_vacuum_scale_factor = 0.01). Check n_dead_tup weekly.

vacuum cleans up dead rows. but only the ones no transaction could still see. one session left idle in transaction since lunch, and vacuum skips everything newer than it. autovacuum looks busy, the table keeps growing. check pg_stat_activity for old backend_xmin.

Autovacuum defaults scale off 20 percent of the table, so a 50M row table can pile up 10M dead tuples before it even starts. Per table autovacuum_vacuum_scale_factor fixes that for the hot ones.

Wraparound is the one that bites tables nobody touches. They still age, and if autovacuum never freezes them, the forced vacuum shows up at the worst possible hour. Good one to have on tape.
October 12, 2026 at 7:57 PM
Appending at 700 MB/s is the easy half. The number I'd want next is what retention does to it, since dropping old partitions is cheap and DELETE plus autovacuum at that rate is not.

Do you really need another system to manage app workflows?

Jobin Augustine looks at PgQ and PgQue as PostgreSQL-native options and how append-only event models can reduce bloat and concurrency issues.
