Unlike Catholic and most Protestant denominations, Orthodox churches have autocephaly meaning each country should have its own (Bulgarian, Romanian, American etc). In Ukraine it was long overdue ("not to anger the bear") but they split after the invasion. So it's not "banned", it's just not Russian.
They are schismatics, but they weren't "thrown out." Moscow left of its own accord after the grant of autocephaly to Ukraine and the revocation of the 1686 letter of issue.

And since the full-scale invasion, it’s gotten a lot worse, since the Moscow Patriarchate clergy were actively working for Russia, including ratting out parishioners to be arrested/tortured/killed during the occupation, so autocephaly—being totally independent of Moscow—is a very big deal now

Of course, I was just pointing this out because autocephaly is a very normal thing, but severing communion isn't, and is what people formally understand as a schism.

I'm not the first to say this, but the actual answer is that the Brothodox contingent in the White House, the ones who used to be Catholic before Francis, are telling Trump that the ROC - Moscow Patriarch are persecuted minorities post-autocephaly.
