Citizens United has facilitated the early stages of foriegn control over the sovereignty of the USA. Just as China was 'opened up' and dominated by Western colonial nations using military force, the USA will be carved up by foreign autocracies through coercion and bribes.
We need to wake up.

In 2013, Gerschewski proposed that autocracies survive through three pillars:

Repression – control through fear and coercion
Co-optation – buying loyalty through rewards
Legitimation – building belief in the regime’s right to rule

No regime can rely on just one.

Yeah, there's what I think of as an anarchist reframing possible to one's worldview taking seriously the justification of modern representative democracies as structurally better than autocracies but still basically big coercion machines imposed on you & so lacking any robust moral claims on anyone

There are many good reasons to accommodate budding dictators, and only one reason not to: Anticipatory obedience is a key building block of their power. The autocracies of the 21st century often don’t need coercion; their subjects comply willingly. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/08/o...

Counterpoint: autocracies use the threat of printing your vote in the newspaper as a tool of coercion to make you vote how they want.
