In need of a timeline cleanse, I opened up this beaut of a manuscript. Gerard of Cremona's (d. 1187) translation of Avicenna's. (Ibn Sina, d. 1037) Canon of Medicine. Couldn't you just get lost in that filigree?

Madrid, Biblioteca Nacional, MS 1193, f. 1r.

This never gets old: reading about a medieval MS & then less than 5 minutes later, you have it open in front of you! Today's beauty, a 1258 copy of Gerard of Cremona's translation of Avicenna's Canon.
We need to be planning now how we're going to piece our world back together. There is still beauty!

In recent decades, scholars have examined various facets of Avicenna’s #logic. But how did Avicenna himself conceptualize logic—its definition, status, and purpose? PhD student Shahab Khademi explores this question in a new paper! 👇📃 www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... #philsky #histphil #HPS
Avicenna on the Meaning of Logic: Revisiting Five Major Works
Avicenna's logic has gathered much interest in recent decades. However, one significant point that has hitherto been frequently neglected is what logic means to Avicenna in the first place. Conside...

Fragments from a MS of Avicenna's Canon. The shape of the second one makes you wonder how it was used in a binding (Copenhagen, KB, Fragm. 1623 and 1624)

This was the paper I most enjoyed reading* during my recent trip down an Avicenna-and-friends rabbit-hole:
Ogden, "Avicenna's Emanated Abstraction".

Clear, elegant, scholarly but not showy.

A wonderful forthcoming article on Avicenna's floating man argument. Its methodology is dear to me, because it analyzes Avicenna's argument as rigorously as one'd do in contemporary philosophy, while justifying itself through textual underdetermination. Highly recommended! philpapers.org/rec/ALMCTU

This paper offers a new take on Avicenna's Flying Man, one that explains why it's better than its Cartesian counterpart.

Avicenna's Canon was arguably the most influential translation made by Gerard of Cremona. The influence of this MS ended when it was cut up and and its leaves were re-used as book covers (Trier, Stadtbibliothek, R V 48)

René Descartes died this date in 1650. Rationalist. Cartesian coordinates married maths and geometry. Cogito ergo sum replicated Augustine's Quia ergo sum si fallor and Avicenna's flying man. Buried in the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Today is #WorldDiabetesDay. In the Middle Ages, Ibn Sina (Avicenna) gave an account of diabetes mellitus in his Canon of Medicine. He described a number of clinical features relating to diabetes, most notably the sweetness of the urine produced by diabetic patients. #histmed #historyofmedicine
