#Axanthism
For instance, a species like this that is normally green can be this sort of bright blue with axanthism, but an animal that is normally yellow will typically be white if that yellow pigment is genetically suppressed.

Maybe not the best name because axanthism doesn't always result in this same color—since it is caused by a lack of yellow pigment, the resulting color depends on what other natural pigments an animal has.

(Posting in my personal capacity.) A rare genetic mutation called #Axanthism makes the skin of some American Green Tree #Frogs appear blue. Wanna see one? 👇🏼#science #conservation #research

It very well could be. I looked up the name of the mutation: Axanthism

So, it could be affecting a tree frog since it affects yellow pigmentation

@janejune.bsky.social Can you believe the beauty of that blue?🩵🐸💚🥰

The frog has a genetic mutation called axanthism. This condition stops the animal from producing yellow pigment. Normal green skin relies on a mix of blue and yellow layers; without the yellow layer, the frog appears bright blue.

Yesterday, I went out to find a Southern Green Frog (Hyla meridionalis) with axanthism – a rare genetic condition that gives them a gorgeous sky-blue color. 🩵

I was incredibly lucky to find not one, but two individuals with this condition – definitely made the long drive worth it! 🥰

Feeling blue? A citizen scientist asked about blue (axanthic) frogs, leading to a pandemic-era internship project to explore the spatial, phylogenetic, and temporal prevalence of axanthism in frogs lead by Drs. Molly Womack and Rayna Bell. Read the results this #AWNews at AmphibiaWeb.org

went to a restaurant in my hometown that i hadn't been to in many years and i completely forgot there's a bunch of taxidermy/animal models with informational plaques all over the walls. but i never noticed the insects before!! what a nice eastern lubber. also leopard frog with um axanthism

'Lovely freak of nature': Mutant blue frog hops into wildlife sanctuary workshop
Researchers in Australia spotted a magnificent tree frog with blue skin — the result of a rare genetic mutation called axanthism, which suppresses yellow pigments that usually tint the frogs green.

I found this super rare blue leopard frog when I was 12 or so. Never seen another one like it! It's called axanthism, where there's no yellow pigment. Green-yellow = blue.

Check it out... he's the one on the right! Usually these lizards are green but he appears blue because he lacks yellow pigment. These lizards were caught off the same wall and we actually found quite a few little blue dudes in this area!💙

Axanthism comes from the Greek ξανθός (xanthos = blonde).

Had to zoom in so it's a bit pixelly, but my green frog (Lithobates clamitans) is blue. Axanthism? Is there a #FrogSky or #Herpetology feed?

A fairly rare blue frog
It's actually a regular Green Frog with axanthism, a condition that inhibits the production of the yellow pigment that's required to produce green when combined with blue.

Have you heard of axanthism? This Green Frog has it! 🐸

It’s a mutation that prevents animals from producing yellow pigment. So it makes green animals appear blue!

It's leap day. Post frog.

A frog I saw last year with a mutation called axanthism that reduces yellow pigment, making it appear partially blue-ish. Probably a northern green frog ((Lithobates clamitans melanota).

I recently read that in rare cases, some frogs have a mutation called axanthism that reduces yellow pigment, which makes them appear blue instead of green. Then bam! I saw one on the trail.

"Axanthism" is when a frog is missing its yellow.
