Sexy azeotrope

Not sure how to pull this one off
October 26, 2025 at 12:20 AM
I prefer the term "ethanol azeotrope"
March 5, 2026 at 10:26 AM
(Well, not PURE sulfuric acid, unless the star photovaporates the water and gives you an azeotrope. Expect something in between battery acid and vinegar for these extreme cases - the pH will be moderated by dissolved minerals and the presence of significant amounts of water)
December 15, 2025 at 5:25 PM
i am technically only 97.2% transgender by volume because i have become an azeotrope and can’t be distilled further
December 15, 2023 at 4:05 PM
That's because you can make 95% with just distillation but going higher requires special equipment to complete the water removal. Word of the day is now azeotrope.

I actually have long thought that there is some weird azeotrope-ing (or azeotrope breaking) going on in 'good' liquor that we don't understand yet. I have zero evidence. I think (again, all feels) there's some of this in play on well mixed drinks too
March 31, 2024 at 11:31 PM
Tiens d'ailleurs, suffit-il vraiment de "cuire" pour suffisamment désalcooliser ? Dans mes souvenirs eau-éthanol ça forme un azéotrope…
November 29, 2025 at 5:50 PM
dress that's just the curve of the graph mirrored with some kind of embellishment at the azeotrope?
October 26, 2025 at 12:22 AM
No I mean it’s not physically possible to classically distill alcohol to 199 proof. Ethanol and water form an azeotrope around 95% ABV
March 4, 2024 at 2:05 PM
Yeah, most of it, but if you don't have a spec way to assess the spec, you could have quite a bit, depending on what you started with, especially since there's an azeotrope.
November 17, 2025 at 8:44 PM
plus I don't want to be dealing with weird azeotrope stuff

The Azeotrope
Pretty much like a Long Island Iced Tea but with added Everclear
December 27, 2025 at 11:18 PM
No pure alcohol for human consumption is available anywhere btw. It's an azeotrope with water and can't be distilled beyond 96% without adding something like benzene or cyclohexane.
September 20, 2026 at 6:54 PM
lol i didn't hear that but in school they told us not to drink the ethanol in the lab because they used benzene to break the azeotrope and push it to 100%. guessing they did a rush job on recovering the benzene somewhere in there

Synergistic Multiscale Design of Metal–Organic Framework Membrane via Biomineralization-Inspired Templating for High-Efficiency Azeotrope Separation http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/jacs.5c21467

PEO synthesis usually starts with pyrophoric potassium reagents (cumylpotassium, potassium naphthalenide) because ROH + KOH barely forms the alkoxide you need. The equilibrium lies far left. What if you just removed the water?

Azeotrope enabled polymerization of ethylene oxide
Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is a nonionic hydrophilic polymer having the same repeat unit as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), distinguished from PEG only by mass or synthetic approach. It is of interest…

For the name of the pub, I don't know. But I'd definitely refer to whatever 190 proof grain alcohol being served as The Azeotrope. A rule would be in place that you must use the words "India Pale Ale" when ordering that type or beer or else you're informed 2-propanol is unfit for human consumption.

You're welcome. This is an awesome goal. Iirc the methanol/tol azeotrope isn't great, mostly methanol so if you're doing a soxhlet extraction it could be hard
September 2, 2025 at 5:52 PM
if you can get ahold of a copy, good god i wish the charts and tables were just commonplace in every lab. the water azeotrope plots and solubility plots are so underrated

Toluene-water azeotrope (84 C). Reflux pulls water out; Le Chatelier drives ROH + KOH to potassium alkoxide. Then add THF and EO: >99% yield, no homopolymer, no naphthalene cleanup. Works on simple alcohols and PS-OH macroinitiators.
