No, 'tantalising evidence' of smallpox is NOT embedded in the turquoise mask. No expert on the programme says so. It is absolute bollocks (unlike the rest of the programme which, whatever you may make of the artistic choices, largely holds up as history, albeit selective as any single hour must be).
With respect to Anthony Gormley, absolutely nothing he's saying is historically accurate. In particular (spoiler), the turquoise skull mask categorically does not show smallpox lesions. In my view, it most likely represents Nanahuatzin, the leprous creator god who became the sun. #BBCCivilisations

I'd just like to point out that, certain comments notwithstanding, Moctezuma meeting Cortés is nothing like meeting a 'man from Mars'. Not least because (a) he's a man & (b) Spaniards had been around the coast for years before this, and Moctezuma was well aware of them from scouts. #BBCCivilisations
