For a second time, the BCDC hearing on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge multiuse path has been postponed, this time without a firm backup date.
This came at the request of Caltrans, and BCDC is saying that they are expecting an amended permit application that will include "additional benefits."

The bike lane on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge will be open from Thursday afternoons through Sundays starting in October.

BCDC, Chevron, and Richmond Police all say more driving is good for people and the environment. Checks out! Climate denialism is alive and well in “liberal” California.
Final votes are 15 commissioners in favor of the trail closure, 2 opposed, and 1 abstaining. A minimum of 14 votes was needed to pass this, so sadly it means the motion is approved and the bridge trail will be closed 4 days a week for 3 years starting possibly this October.

This particular commissioner, who clearly thinks bikes are toys, was appointed to BCDC by Governor Schwarzenegger (who, I suspect at this point, is more pro-bike than he is).

Another commissioner: I drive across the bridge & see few bike riders. How much money is being spent per bike rider. We need to think of the needs of people who can’t bike.

This misunderstanding of the vote & the purpose of BCDC has since been repeated in media reports following the meeting, including this @berkeleyside.org article which describes the action as a congestion-reduction measure.

I think a 10-mile-long bridge for bikes, connecting that Bay Trail in the East Bay with, I dunno, Coyote Point on the west side, would be fun. If it was only for pedestrians and bikes it could be made out of plastic and aluminum on friction piles. We have this technology. Come at me, BCDC.

From MTC’s official FAQ on the RSR Bridge bike shuttle. I’m glad they’re saying this, as I asked them to be explicit wrt the types of bikes & riders the shuttle won’t accommodate. But it’s very revealing that their service falls short of “maximum feasible public access”.

The two commissioners who voted against the trail closure, Yoriko Kishimoto and Barry Nelson, should be lauded for understanding what the purpose of BCDC is and why they were at the meeting. The rest should be ashamed, incl those who expressed reservations but voted to close the trail anyway
