#BDNF
New paper out online today!!

We identify two previously unrecognized transcripts at the BDNF locus, BDNF-DT and BDNF-AS-DT, that are developmentally regulated, coordinated with BDNF expression, and associated with schizophrenia risk.

Fascinating news update from @natureportfolio.nature.com

— BDNF brain-derived neurotrophic factor supports neural connections
— People with major depressive disorder have lower blood levels of BDNF
— Over time, some antidepressants seem to increase production & signalling of BDNF

The world’s most popular antidepressant drugs are under fire. Nature reports how scientists need to finish answering basic questions about what SSRIs are doing to help people with depression before they can explain fully questions about withdrawal symptoms. 🧠🩺 🧪
The baffling science of SSRIs: how do they really work?
The world’s most popular antidepressant drugs are under fire. But are they really harder to quit than heroin?

You can go into withdrawal from many things. Esp drugs! Esp psychiatric medications! We could talk about how desensitization develops for the vast majority of G-protein coupled receptor agonists! We could talk about changes to neural pathways and BDNF.

But tbh you don't need to know any of it.

In a small study, researchers compared 90 minutes of light cycling against just 6 minutes of high-intensity intervals, and measured BDNF levels after each.

The high-intensity intervals increased BDNF by 4 to 5 times more than the 90-minute session.

Five times the effect, in a fraction of the time.
