#BECCS
Important story.

I know less about the CCS side of the equation, but I do know that the bioenergy part of BECCS won’t work at scale bc it drives up land competition with food production, timber production, & C storage.

But BECCS is the “magic asterisk” that achieves negative emissions in models.

The continued reliance on BECCS in the reports particularly after the failure of cellulosic ethanol - which I think is an irreversible issue - has been problematic for me.

NEW: A U.N. report concluded carbon capture could offset fossil fuels’ effect on climate change.

Two decades later, the process has failed to meaningfully scale up, and it’s proving hard to take the promises back.

Incredible work from @katieworth.bsky.social @amywestervelt.bsky.social and @themadstone.bsky.social on how unproven carbon capture and storage (CCS) came to be legitimized.

Popular CO₂ removal (CDR) methods, bioenergy w/CCS (BECCS) and direct ocean removal, also rely on CCS actually being a thing.

Yes, also considering that all #CCS technologies also rely on this (BECCS, DACCS, PyrCCS, any "liming" from CaCO3)

I don't know the biomass side well, but I can tell you is while concentrated flow CCS works well, post combustion CCS on dilute, variable & contaminated waste streams is only working on a couple of projects, with lots of failures, ergo, big BECCS should probably not be a big part of IAM scenarios.

Welche Technologien sind damit gemeint?

Alles mit CCS offensichtlich nicht (inkl. BECCS, DACCS, PYCCS, Liming aus CaCO3)

In 2006 I coauthored a report for the German government which also covered CCS and concluded:

"Therefore, sequestration can only be regarded as an acceptable climate mitigation technology if long-term CO2 storage for at least 10,000 years can be guaranteed."

I.e., it is not a realistic option.

"Wenn 50% des CO2 aus unterirdischen, geologischen Reservoirs entkäme, wüssten sie [die einpumpende CCS Crew] es nicht"

... das will auch niemand hören - weil es leider auch die Technologien BECCS, DACCS, PyCCS und alles mit Ca(OH)2 (frisch aus CaCO3) betrifft.

I visited Northern Lights in Norway, the project to put CCS-captured CO₂ beneath the North Sea. I spoke with a Norwegian researcher who told me that if 50% of the CO₂ leaked from the undersea geologic reservoirs, they wouldn't know. 🫠

When I taught climate change mitigation, the reliance on CCS and especially BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) in the IPCC reports always felt "off" to me given my work on ethanol. But I'm not a geologist and I trusted the CC mitigation options the IPCC pushed. What a disappointment.

#Deforestation is not a #ClimateSolution. The amount of land needed to grow specifically to burn is untenable. Besides which, #CCS is and has always been a lie pushed and promoted by fossil industry, that despite 30+ yrs of public funding has failed - #Biomass & #BECCS are proven #FalseSolutions.

This is because the IPCC considers reduction unrealistic. What reduction?

Gap three, removals: 250 million extra allowances over 2031 to 2040 would pay for certified BECCS and direct air capture, and waste incineration joins the system. The catch is that capture plants are paid for years before their first certified tonne.

It's not renewable energy. It's fast-track deforestation and mass acceleration of emissions, because #CCS and #BECCS are lies designed to prolong acceptance of fossil use.

Greenlighting BECCS and biochar as removal technologies in the EUTS buys into the fantasy that burying tree carbon “removes” CO2 from the atmosphere – which is exactly what Drax is peddling in its efforts to attract investors. Read our post. www.pfpi.net/2026/10/shou...

Real examples: IPCC AR6 1.5 °C pathways assume up to ~780 billion t CO₂ removed via BECCS this century; overshoot-and-return paths ~380 billion t net removal after 2050. Today’s new methods remove ~1 million t/yr.
October 20, 2026 at 12:37 PM
In the IPCC pathways that overshoot 1.5 °C and come back, the median assumes ~500 billion t of removal by BECCS and machines by 2100. That’s thousands of times today’s rate, every year, for 80 years.

It’s in the Summary for Policymakers (C.3.5), but not in the headline.

Sweden's SEK 9.3bn BECCS award is Europe's largest public bet on engineered removal, run as a reverse auction: the state pays per tonne stored, not per plant built. Until the EU decides whether removals enter the ETS, those tonnes have no compliance value outside Sweden.
October 20, 2026 at 6:40 PM
Daily digest: three numbers landed on the same day. 3% of contracted durable CDR has been delivered, 19% of biochar pure-plays look dead, and Sweden put SEK 9.3bn into one BECCS award. Capital is concentrating in a few state-backed projects while the long tail thins out.
October 20, 2026 at 6:40 PM
Sweden wrote one cheque for SEK 9.3bn (~$1bn) to three bioenergy-with-carbon-capture (BECCS) firms. Brussels has a 250m-allowance tranche to buy the same kind of tonne, terms still under amendment. Same question: who pays for durable removal. Only one answer is bankable today.

Clean Air Task Force launched a tool that scores biomass removal protocols (BECCS, biochar) on biomass origin, land counterfactual, storage duration and leakage. Buyers can compare rulebooks instead of trusting a registry logo. A good protocol score is not a good project.
