Tigst Assefa refused to quit. The Ethiopian marathon star delivered one of the most extraordinary performances of 2026 at the Berlin Marathon — winning the race in a new course-record time of 2:11:04 despite suffering a devastating Achilles injury near the finish. Assefa was on world-record pace for much of the race. At 35 kilometers, she was still ahead of the pace needed to break Ruth Chepngetich’s women's marathon world record of 2:09:56. But around the 40-kilometer mark, everything changed. Assefa began limping and struggling with severe pain. She still pushed through the final stretch and crossed the finish line first, securing her third Berlin Marathon victory and taking 49 seconds off her previous Berlin course record from 2023. Her 2:11:04 was also the third-fastest women's marathon time in history. The full extent of the injury became clear afterward. Medical examinations revealed that Assefa had ruptured her right Achilles tendon. She subsequently underwent successful surgery and said she plans to return to Berlin and eventually break the world record. This is more than a marathon victory. It is a story of determination, pain, resilience and extraordinary athletic ability. In this video, we look at Tigst Assefa's incredible Berlin Marathon performance, her new course record, the dramatic injury that nearly ended her race, her Achilles tendon surgery, and the remarkable story behind one of the most talked-about marathon finishes of 2026. We also look at Assefa's incredible career, including her Paris 2024 Olympic silver medal, her previous marathon world record, and her historic 2026 London Marathon victory, where she ran 2:15:41 to set a new women's-only world record.
