De Amerikaanse filmproducent en regisseur Roger Corman is op 98jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat hebben zijn nabestaanden laten weten. Hij overleed in zijn huis in Santa Monica.ppCorman stond bekend als de koning van de Bfilm. Hij regisseerde vele lowbudgetklassiekers zoals Attack of the Crab Monsters 1957 en Little Shop of Horrors 1960. Zijn films betekenden regelmatig de doorbraak van jonge acteurs die later zouden uitgroeien tot Hollywoods beroemdste acteurs en regisseurs, onder wie Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern en Ellen Burstyn.ph2Honderden productiesh2pCorman werkte sinds 1955 in de filmindustrie. Als producent werkte hij aan meer dan vierhonderd producties, als regisseur maakte hij er vele tientallen. Tot de bekendste titels behoren The Raven en The Pit and the Pendulum. Eind jaren 70 had hij een grote hit met de film Piranha.ppCorman had vooral veel succes met horror, actiefilms en sciencefiction. In 2009 kreeg hij een ereOscar voor zijn grote bijdrage aan de filmcultuur.ppCorman moest vaak werken met minimale budgetten. Ook moesten zijn films regelmatig in zeer korte tijd gemaakt worden, soms wel binnen vijf dagen. Toen regisseur Ron Howard in 1977 vroeg om een extra halve dag om een scne opnieuw op te nemen, zei producent Corman tegen hem: Ron, je kunt terugkomen als je wilt, maar niemand zal er meer zijn.ph2Lowbudget geeft bepaalde kansenh2pCorman zag het produceren van lowbudgetfilms altijd als een mogelijkheid, zo zei hij in een documentaire in 2007. Er zijn veel beperkingen verbonden aan het werken met een laag budget, maar tegelijkertijd zijn er bepaalde kansen. Je kunt nog een beetje gokken. Je kunt experimenteren. Je moet een creatievere manier vinden om een probleem op te lossen of een concept te presenteren.ppNaast het produceren van snelle, goedkope films bracht Corman ook prestigieuze buitenlandse films uit in de Verenigde Staten. Zo was hij medeverantwoordelijk voor de Amerikaanse distributie van het werk van Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Franois Truffaut en Akira Kurosawa. De films Amarcord en The Tin Drum wonnen een Oscar voor beste nietEngelstalige film.ppCorman was ook af en toe te zien als acteur, onder meer in de met Oscars bekroonde The Godfather II uit 1974 en The Silence of the Lambs uit 1991.p
