#BJSM
The BJSM and the @bmj.com have some explaining to do. How did this shoddy paper get past academic review?

New to #bluesky and excited to share a new publication at the interface of my two main clinical interests in neuropsychiatry.

"New Framework for the Continuum of Concussion and Functional Neurological Disorder" with @silverberglab.bsky.social in BJSM. Thread below 🧵

Good critique of that BJSM

A new review in the British Journal of Sports Medicine insists men are weaker than women, really.

The recent study by Alvares et al. (2025) published this week (18/02/2025) in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) showed that trans athletes performed similarly to cis athletes. @traceyholmes.bsky.social @thehonestbroker.bsky.social

Which of these two recent guidelines do you prefer for patients with Plantar Heel Pain?

Return to play Protocol vom BJSM. 7 Tage nach Infekt völlige! Symptomfreiheit, keine Meds mehr. Dann strukturierter langsamer progredienter Wiedereinstieg ins Training über 18 Tage. Nach Protocol. War für COVID. Gilt aber eigentlich für alle Infekte.

We wrote a short blog post for the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) summarizing our recent study.

Unbeknownst to me, my patient wrote about her struggles and recovery from a head injury triggering FND

Great to see a full page spread in @theglobeandmail.com on a topic that needs more attention

Her eloquent narrative is a perfect (and timely) complement to our recent BJSM piece. Article ⬇️

Repost from: @them - new BJSM study shows trans women likely don't retain athletic advantages over cis women after hormone therapy. This refutes the logic for blanket bans and counters claims that testosterone-dominant puberty confers permanent physical gains—an argument often used for exclusion.

February was an insane month. Three papers sent to journals.

First one accepted to JAMA and should he published soon.

Second in review at BJSM.

Third in review at JACC.

Brilliant research from Dr Tim Hoenig and colleagues in the BJSM has given us a great overview of return to sport times for low and high risk bone stress injuries. See paper for details 🔗 bjsm.bmj.com/content/57/7...

Proud to share our new publication in BJSM, which comes just after we celebrated 2,000 exercise sessions delivered through Addi Moves—a trauma-informed, community-based physical activity program co-designed with and for people experiencing social and economic disadvantage.

Efficacy vs. effectiveness … do you know the difference?

Do #PhysicalActivity programmes really work in low- and middle-income countries?

Our recently published systematic review in BJSM suggests yes. The gains are often modest, but they matter, when scaled across populations.

The conclusion they make isn't supported by the data. Hopefully the BJSM will show some integrity and publish the letters they've been sent.
One problem:The biggest study compared tall females who trained a lot with short transwomen who trained far less.

One of the more forgiving critiques:
Why Recreational Fitness Data on Trans Athletes Can’t Set Elite Sports Policy
What a widely cited BJSM paper actually shows—and why it doesn’t answer questions about elite competition.

2/2 @demorgen

“The retractions join 11 more of McCrory’s works, including 10 from BJSM & one from Current Sports Medicine Reports…McCrory, whose University of Melbourne email address no longer seems to work, has resigned from key posts in the wake of the scandal. The BJSM said he agreed with the new retractions”

I would be interested to read the research, but I can't see a link to the paper in the piece. I'll have a look on the BJSM site.
