A former professional Romanian footballer has told a London court that he was not the person who stabbed an Iranian journalist in a suspected politically motivated attack. Nandito Badea, 21, who previously played for clubs including Astra and Blejoi, is on trial alongside George Stana, 25, accused of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following an incident in Wimbledon, south-west London, in March 2024. The victim, Iran International journalist Pouria Zeraati, was reportedly stabbed three times in the leg outside his home and left bleeding in the street. Prosecutors allege the attack was a planned operation preceded by surveillance and potentially ordered by a third party linked to the Iranian state. Giving evidence, Badea denied carrying out the stabbing and claimed another man, identified as David Andrei, was responsible. He told the jury that he believed he was only involved in surveillance related to a supposed personal dispute and had no expectation of violence. Badea stated that he followed instructions to approach the journalist to ask for money, believing a confrontation would take place without harm. He said that Andrei suddenly produced a knife and stabbed the victim before fleeing the scene, causing him to panic and leave in a vehicle driven by Stana. The court also heard that Badea claimed he was threatened by Andrei afterwards and feared for his safety and that of his family. CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts have been presented as part of the prosecution case. The journalist’s employer, Iran International, has previously been designated a hostile organisation by Iranian authorities, and staff have faced threats, prompting security measures in the UK and temporary relocation of operations. The trial continues as both defendants deny the charges against them.
