On 31st October, the Home Office stopped issuing biometric residence cards (BRPs) as part of the eVisa transition.

Until now, 4 million people relied on physical documents, including BRPs, to prove their immigration status and basic rights in the UK.

Here's what we've seen so far👇

Your regular reminder that the vast, vast majority of migrants to the UK do not, in fact, have access to benefits and this is very clearly stated on BRPs as “no recourse to public funds”.

The Home Office stopped issuing hard copy residence permits (BRPs) in October 2024.

Now they’ve taken away the telephone number for airlines and other carriers to quickly find out if someone without a current hard copy residence permit has the right to enter UK.
The HO has removed the contact numbers of the UK Border Force Carrier Support Hub from the relevant page on GOV.UK.

People who arrive are already given an ARC card while they’re in the asylum system, and a BRP. And that’s already chaos! BRPs with wrong names, getting lost, not being issued.

No one’s ever been able to properly explain how ID cards would help with irregular migration?!

Put a list of 12 Better Research Practices (BRPs) together 8 years ago with Brent Roberts and Rolf Zwaan. Let's see how they aged. Gist of 1st one: pre-register hypotheses when you have them and report deviations plus additional unplanned analyses as appropriate.
A Commitment to Better Research Practices (BRPs) in Psychological Science

Question for immigration Blueskyers: I’m trying to help someone with refugee status register for HRMC online services but they need to verify their identity online. The gov.uk ID service doesn’t accept e-visas, only BRPs, but this is the same government that no longer issues BRPs. So, what do we do?

2/ For decades, it has been accepted that under data protection principles, gender markers are useless when a photo is included. And including them can even be unlawful. That’s why they have been removed from many documents, such as driving licences, BRPs, naturalisation certificates, and eVisas.

As someone with a visa and BRP, I feel like a bit of a canary in the coal mine here. Last time I tried to come back to the UK after a trip post-digitization (they had us mail in our physical BRPs to replace them with an intangible one) I got pulled aside at the gate. Nobody knew what was going on.
Having studied #digitalID in depth for my PhD and written a book about this way before anyone had even flagged it as a problem - this a TERRIBLE idea. We have been warning the UK government about the dangers of digital ID for years. No one listened. #digitalidentity www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Keir Starmer to announce plans for digital ID scheme

What we've seen until now:
🔸 EU citizens who are seeing BRPs linked to their account, of nationalities they do not hold
🔸 People with other immigration statuses seeing passports and BRPs that are not their own

Great in principle! But I wonder if it’s a bit too late… are they going to reissue all BRPs? Or if the message is that no-longer-valid BRPs are still acceptable, that might create even further confusion. I never understood why they can’t have at least a few years of having both physical and eVisa

He probably doesn’t even know about how they told people they can continue using their expired BRPs because the system’s still in beta at launch
May 19, 2025 at 6:32 PM
Underrated annoying aspect of the UK online censorship thing is that they want you to show ID at the same time they're trying to transition to not issuing actual BRPs, because they want you to use some website held together with tape and rubber bands
July 30, 2025 at 8:22 AM
Yes, leaving this decision until a month after the Home Office stopped issuing BRPs means that there will still be a lot of people left in very difficult circumstances
the Home Office was living in absolute la-la land even after Labour took office - delaying the deadline should have been the second thing it did after the election (having scrapped the Rwanda scheme, ofc)

For me it was the rules, didn’t play the setting.

Less fussy than rqg- best combat of any of the BRPs…
