Pullman Porters were not well paid, especially before the creation of the BSCP helped invigorate organized negotiation over wages and working conditions. They paid their own expenses from meager wages, and relied on tips to get by. They were also expected to be servile and essentially anonymous.

BSCP was an early example of the link between the labor movement and the civil rights movement. As BSCP shows, labor unions are an excellent tool to protect the most vulnerable workers.

Many know how, under the leadership of A. Philip Randolph, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) fought for 12 years for recognition as a union, decades after white railroaders were unionized. Porters made up 44% of the Pullman workforce, yet were excluded.

That fight was a blueprint. 🌱

In 1925, Randolph formed and led the BSCP, which secured their first collective bargaining agreement in 1937. The BSCP secured higher wages, better conditions and benefits, and a decrease in monthly hours from as many as 400 to a 240-hour limit.

LBJ awarded Randolph the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964 for his lifelong commitment to civil rights. Randolph retired from the BSCP in 1968 due to chronic illness but continued work with his institute and with the AFL-CIO Executive Council. He died on May 16, 1979, at age 90. /end

In 1925, Randolph founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first successful African American labor union. The BSCP represented the porters and maids of the Pullman Company and was the first Black union to achieve a national collective bargaining agreement with a massive corporation. /3
