@carlafrancome.bsky.social Hi. You might remember us from “the town that cycling forgot”! Check out planning application 3/26/1274/FUL on East Herts DC planning portal to see how far we have come! It has been a long haul to get this far, with thanks to WWCT and BSTC

This has been the relatively quick bit! Well done to BSTC for having the political will and vision to continue to push the project through the various obstacles put in its way!

It's interesting that not only do trans women show closer BSTc sizes/densities to cis women early on, but they also *do not expand in adulthood* the way cis men's do.

It's probably not like this, but given that the density of nerves is really close to neurological sex not just in the human BSTc part of the BNST, but also in numerous animal analogs, the somatostatin nerve-based "filter" is a very appealing idea to me.

That's what I was getting at, the amount of extant research is too tiny to draw definite conclusions. All we have is that there is SOME sort of neurological cause, but it could be any number of potential neurological causes, not necessarily just BSTc size.

if a trans woman's BSTc were to be "too large" or a trans man's BSTc were to be "too small", is that then evidence that they're not REALLY trans? what about cis outliers? before even getting to "how could a difference like this be taken to reflect nonbinary and/or fluid genders at all"

even taking the 2001 study completely as-is (and assuming that the lone trans man who was included in it is representative of the majority of transmasculine people), what, then, if someone is trans but just happens to have an unusually large or small BSTc for their gender, etc?

Do you know what BSTc stands for?

Nods. I would have mentioned how the BSTc of the Hypothalamus is sexually dimorphic in humans, but I was quickly hitting the character limit.

Further, Zhou's team also found that the BSTc in trans people closely matched the BSTc's of their identified gender, NOT their gender assigned at birth.

In the mid-1990s, Zhou et. al. discovered that the bed nucleus (the bottom area) in the stria terminalis (the groove that runs around the hypothalamus) in the hypothalamus (abbreviated BSTc) was structured differently for men and women.

hypothalamus, usually abbreviated as the BSTc.

As the below microscope slides show, the BSTc of trans women is nearly identical to the BSTc of cisgender women. It’s also not at all like the BSTc of straight cisgender men or gay cisgender men.

This is why every major medical organization signed

Except all that research is done.

There are dozens of neurobiological markers that have been discovered that show how trans people are different. Unfortunately, so far, there are no tests for these markers that work on living people. Most of the research is done on cadavers but the evidence exists.

sexual orientation.

This was discovered back in the 1990’s and has been repeated and confirmed many times since then.

So homosexuality doesn’t directly correlate to being transgender and there’s neurobiological proof of that.

Trans people exist. They are unusual so trying to apply the usual approximations is as silly as trying to apply Newtonian physics to objects close to light speed. Legislating such things is as insane as legally ruling that P=3. I hope this explains why I don't base my opinions on 9th grade biology.
