Is there a history of marketing book that's not a bschool textbook but an actual social & cultural history of how capitalism manipulates us through advertising? I'm thinking patent medicines, cigarettes, right thru today's drug ads and fake "science."

Have seen this cycle a lot of times: Paper promotes the benefits of AI in education, paper is hyped in media/LinkedIn/in AI circles. Paper is retracted as bullshit months later

Um, I went to bschool and that’s what it is. Accounting. Operations. Econ. Case studies aka business history. There’s some healthy bs in there too but you are describing what business school currently is.

Sure, it has been a bit slower in Bschool journals (not where most of the research at issue was published anyway). But average sample sizes in Bschool journals are much larger than before, pre-registration is more commonly used, and methods are more closely scrutinized than before.

Lots of Bschool psych research is aimed at addressing social problems,by studying decision-making and beliefs, testing interventions and messaging, including re health.

IMHO, the differences between a researcher in a Bschool or in a psych department studying the same topic are relatively small. Bschool researchers tend to be a bit more interdisciplinary and more applied, on average, with lots of exceptions.

Most of accounting is just addition and subtraction, but spreadsheets convinced people that fancier math is more meaningful. 99% of business school is just "this degree means that investment bankers will talk to you", very few graduates have any technical expertise, Bschool does not teach that

If all the Bschool psych findings you know about are crumbling, you may have been reading quite narrowly and missed out on a lot of useful but not earth-shattering research that is relevant for people's actual lives.

This reminds me of an ethics class in Bschool where the prof sought to twist the would be captains of industry in knots with the trolley problem and variations on it, only to have every mil vet student answer immediately -

If everybody jumps at the same time, all will take the hit. Like you said, mutual suicide pacts. When I was in BSchool, I thought these guys were Masters of the Universe. Now I think they are fool, who dont understand rudimentary finance. I hope your workouts are going wonderfully. Stay consistant.

Likely a few things going together here. One is looking under the street lights because that's where the light is (flashy Bschool findings attracting attention). A second is whether the association between fraud and Bschool are linked via a common cause or common outcome.

No one is wishing they could go back to their BSchool lectures or their CompSci classes. No one is wishing they paid better attention in MicroBio. They want to revisit "History of Religion," "The High Middle Ages," "Antebellum History," "History of Censorship," and more.
