7/ Thus, BTSP may be rather well suited to efficiently store information about spike trains.

5/ In the recently discovered in vivo learning rule, termed BTSP, rare, possibly stochastic dendritic “plateau potentials” provide a common gating signal to synapses across a dendritic arbor.

How many bits of information can different synaptic learning rules store about spike trains? In new work I attempt to calculate this analytically and propose a potential first-principles account of BTSP: journals.aps.org/pre/abstract...
Information retention by synaptic learning rules in stochastic spiking neural networks
Physical learning systems require a means to store information about the past. In the brain, information is thought to be stored in synaptic connections between neurons whose weights change in respons...

How does a place cell know when to rewrite itself? Check out our new preprint on spike-history gating of BTSP and closed-loop rewriting of CA1 representations. Congrats Anno! @ackurth.bsky.social

I'm pretty sure I played all of your games. Starting with BtSP a few years back

I gotta tell you

I LOVE how grounded the stories you tell are. There's some level of fantasy, of course. It always feels like we are just a person. Not some King or The Chosen One.

They always end too soon too haha

Yeah - they can/should be separated into process and product, was just compressing b/c we keep them together atm. Taking BTSP as example alternate process, I wonder what others we may be missing, possibly at a higher-order scale, drawing from cell heterogeneity.

We were actually discussing this at a workshop earlier this year.

In particular:

The dynamics of BTSP actually seem to potentially be counter to a gradient descent mechanism, and more in line with hashing.

amateur here, but is it plausible that pallial amygdala or piriform cortex share credit-assignment mechanisms with neocortex? i know there's BTSP in hippocampus but i wonder if these other regions could offer simpler test cases

4/ We built a circuit around two-compartment pyramidal neurons receiving distinct input streams, and trained it to balance behavioural timescale synaptic plasticity (BTSP) with distal apical dendrite inhibition.

I had vaguely heard of "one-shot learning" brain plasticity and this @quantamagazine.bsky.social article by Yasemin Saplakoglu offers a good overview of what “behavioral timescale synaptic plasticity" (BTSP) is / could be.

“[behavioral timescale synaptic plasticity (BTSP)] is induced by single dendritic plateau potentials, as opposed to many action potentials, and is thus capable of producing new place cells in one trial.”
