I went to Technical college from 84-86 to get a BTec in Hotel, Catering and Institutional Operations, which included traing as both a chef and front of house and got a grant of about £1700 a year split over the 3 terms.

I just mentioned those! I taught guitar and band mentored with BTEC students. Two GCSE equivalent and very hands on stuff.

Alevels=pure academic: about 20 % =points for uni entry. btec courses 25% = mix of exam, assessment/practice: =3 ALevels. We have new vocational GCSE & vocational Tlevels (technical practice) all catering to practical & academic study for uni/employment

I went to a school with the 3rd best GCSE results in Wales. Our head, a PhD holder, said nobody needs 11 GCSEs and to take at least one BTEC they offered. I didn't but in retrospect he was right, you can do both. Core subjects remain compulsory and people are making too much of this.

We also have City and Guilds qualifications
Are these going to be removed ?

The Art/Design BTEC I set up in school saved many a student from exclusion and many went on to do degrees or HND's. Gove ruined them and I had to stop running it as far too much written work and other 'academic' pressures. Had many yr 9's very upset it was no longer available as it became so popular

So many of us did better with the continual assessment & practical stuff, rather than academic & final exams.
Too many politicians are still privately educated nobs who know f* all about real people.

Your bog standard comprehensive isn't set up. There are sixth-form colleges that run practical courses like this. The old Btec courses have run for years.

BTEC Engineering so there’s a class for the ‘naughty’ boys, that sort of thing.

This already exists and these reforms will worsen the problem. Of the two local schools my daughter in Y6, who is really creative and crafty and loves DT, can realistically go to - neither offer Design Technology GCSE and it’s BTEC this and NCFE that and just not good enough really.

Younger daughter did a 1 year residential BTEC about 25 miles away from home which eased the transition. She was a very young 18 year old. She then took a gap year so didn’t actually go to university until she was 20.

I would call it ‘still problematic’ and I say that as someone who taught, and will defend, lots of parts of BTEC. Controlled assessments were an absolute nightmare in GCSEs.

Too few schools have enough devices (or even solid enough WiFi across the whole estate) for that to happen. There’s also still the time issue. As mentioned, BTEC differs by content which lends itself to things students do. In other subjects, coursework just munches curriculum learning time.

given lvl2 btec coursework is supervised and time logged that would require teaching staff to be complicit.
we already have secured IT environments for students to do exams on computers. why not non-exam assessment as well?
