🌱🌾🌻🌳🌍 Bloody cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum) bright magenta flowers. Pretty palmate leaves. Locally common on natural limestone like cliffs and pavements & nearby grassland, scrub, sands. Derbyshire, Burren, Avon Gorge, Gower, Great Orme, Ingleborough. Also garden plant. #BUC2024

⚘️🌱🌾🌴🌿🌍🧪🌶 Few people eat whole raw hot chilli peppers (Capsicum species), but look at this bird! Chilli peppers have evolved so birds distribute their seeds. Birds lack receptors for the capsaicin that gives the heat and pain sensation to people. #BUC2024

🌾🌍🌱🌺In autumn & winter, dead flowerheads remain on plants. However even the freshest summer flowers of carline thistle ( Carlina vulgaris, Asteraceae) look dead! They look and feel dry and spiky. Grows in limestone and chalk areas, poor soils, unimproved grassland, England, Wales, Ireland. #BUC2024

🌾🌍🌱🌿🧪Apium graveolens. Better known as celery (crunchy, tasty leaf stems), celeriac (expanded tasty hypocotyl, keeps well overwinter), celery leaves (varieties grown for leaf production) and celery seed (flavouring). All from one species originating in Mediterranean and Europe area. #BUC2024

🌱🌍🌿🍄🧪Borage (Borago officinalis), also called starflower. Boraginaceae family. Originates around the Mediterranean region. Now in many other places. Cultivated for seed oil, substantial levels of gamma-linolenic acid & others. Flowers used as a garnish on food & drink. #BUC2024

🌍🌱🌾🌳🌻 Dill (Anethum graveolens, family Apiaceae). Originates from North Africa and Arabian Peninsula region. Seeds & leaves now used to flavour foods & preserves around the world. Likes rich, well drained soil & sunshine not shade. #BUC2024

🌱🌲🌴🌳🌾🌎Many monkey puzzle trees (Chilean pine, pinõnero, Araucaria araucana) are in gardens around the world. It is endangered in its wild home of south-central Andes. Separate male and female plants. Seeds dispersed by long-haired grass mouse (Abrothrix longipilis) & parakeets. #BUC2024

🌱🌍🌿🍄🌾Wild wollemi pines are around 100 plants in an Australian valley. However, many now grown in gardens & botanic gardens around the world. Related to monkey puzzle tree. Separate male & female trees. Another tree that dinosaurs would have known! #BUC2024

🌱🌍🌿🌾🍄 What is a fruit? Many delicious ones - apples, bananas, kiwifruit, mango, blueberry, hazelnuts, chili - so many! Technical definition the seed-bearing structure in flowering plants formed from the ovary after flowering. But so many different shapes, textures, features, sizes. #BUC2024

🌱🌿🌾🌏Not a palm (angiosperm) but a gymnosperm, sago cycad, originating from Japan. Separate male & female plants. Slow growing, long lived. Roots host nitrogen fixing bacteria (Anabaena species). Sago can be prepared from its pith, with toxin removal. Also ornamental plant. #BUC2024

🌍🌾🌱🌴 Botanists use many terms for distinctive plant fruits. One is drupe, where a single seed is encased in a hard shell formed from the ovary wall. Outside this is a fleshy layer. Plants forming drupes include coffee, dates, olives, mango & all Prunus fruits (eg plums). #BUC2024

🌱🌾🍄🌎🌳 Orchids provide virtually no food for their seeds. Instead, germinating seed has to quickly hook up with a fungus to supply food to it. Orchids found worldwide, in top 2 largest flowering plant families, around 28,000 species. Plants produce thousands of tiny seeds. #BUC2024
