An "academic" text about the history of Babaylan, women-shamans who accepted indigenous genders that are close in definition to "trans woman" / "trans fem". Nuance that I can't describe rn because of how baffled I am about this text.

The revolts in this text I am assuming to be the Bankaw revolt led by a Babaylan named Pagali, and Tamblot- as many rebellions in the early days of Spanish colonialism were lead by Babaylan. "Historians" should know that we literally do not know Tamblot and Pagali's gender.

In honor of this month, I want to share some really cool details about my Filipino roots.

Mabuhay Pride 🌈
CZARINA in tribal Filipino ceremonial attire made of gold. Gold is used as a symbol of protection. Not just bling ✨ As a gender-queer Filipino-Spanish-American with deep Indigenous roots and a fourth-generation descendant of the Filipino Babaylan Dakot of Nueva Ecija, I carry a lineage that reaches back to the pre-colonial Philippines. The Babaylan were revered spiritual leaders, healers, and custodians of ancestral wisdom - roles held predominantly by women, as well as some men and feminine-presenting individuals entrusted with sacred responsibilities. They emerged from Indigenous societies where women often held significant authority and where gender diversity was acknowledged long before colonial rule imposed more rigid binaries. Long before modern society as we know it took shape, gender diversity was not merely acknowledged - it was often understood, respected, and woven into the fabric of community life. The idea that identity exists beyond rigid binaries is not new; it is rooted in traditions and ways of knowing that long predate the systems that sought to erase them. Happy Pride.

Fun fact about Filipinos: In pre colonial Philippines, we had female priestesses called the babaylan. Men could only become priestesses if they acted and wore clothing like a woman’s. Filipinos are way cooler than you think. Let me know if you want to join the list 😎
