It's happened in the past (John "Babbacombe" Lee, Joseph Samuel) but it's pretty much at the whim of the law.

Re Christa Pike and a botched execution: have they not heard of Babbacombe Lee and the English court's recognition of divine intervention in the event of a failed execution? I used to own the Fairport Convention album:

There was the case of Joseph Samuel in Australia, who survived three hangings: 'the governor and the crowd agreed that it was a sign from God that Joseph Samuel had not committed any crime deserving of execution.' See also John 'Babbacombe' Lee. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_...

I would concur. John Babbacombe Lee (England) & Joseph Samuel (Australia) survived three attempts at hanging & had their sentences conmuted to life. It appears the state could have made further attempts but sense prevailed

Sent a link it seems they can (probably) but whether they will is a moot point.
John Babbacombe Lee survived three hanging attempts & his sentence was comnuted to life the same happened to Joseph Samuel in Sydney Australia. Both i believe could have faced further attempts.

Reminds me of 2 UK cases. Craig & Bentley, when a policeman was killed by the juvenile, who couldn't hang, so they hanged the mentally deficient adult, who was in police custody at the time of the killing.
Also John "Babbacombe" Lee, who survived 3 attempts to hang him & was then given life.

Because I brought it up last night, in 1884 in Exeter, John Babbacombe Lee was supposed to be executed by hanging for the murder of Emma Keyes. The attempts to carry out that sentence failed. Here's a good write up of the history of the case.
