And! the homestead exemption only applies (in Michigan) if it's your primary residence. And! they were renting out the place in Bloomfield (v pricey!) which disqualifies your *homestead* (clue is in the name) exemption. Yeah, they got some hefty backtaxes/penaties to pay. 😪

Highly recommend using FreeTaxUSA over other tax services like Turbotax, my taxes ended up being several thousand less through them and it was comparatively easy to fill out. Also, call the IRS and talk to them, they're way more forgiving than you'd think
